5 Things You Should Do Following A Car Accident

By LaMesaDuiLawyer | August 15, 2010

Chances are we'll all be involved in some sort of car accident in our lives. It could be a fender-bender or it could be a 30-car pile-up. There are several steps you should take, no matter how big or small the accident is and no matter if it's your fault or the other guy's. So, before you get your Long Island auto insurance provider on the line, do these steps first:

1.  Make Sure You're Not Injured - make sure to check yourself out before you help any passengers you have with you, even children. You're no good to the friends and family with you if you're trying to patch up their minor injuries while you're bleeding to death. First see if you're injuries aren't life-threatening, then you can assist others. If you or another is badly injured, call the paramedics.

2.  Inspect the Car for Smoke or Fire - if you struck something in front, see if the engine is smoking or on fire. After this you should determine if the gas tank has been compromised or is already on fire. Do this after you've determined how badly injured everyone is in order to see if it's safe to stay in the vehicle or if people should be moved. If you see fire or smoke, immediately get everyone out of the car, but be careful with anyone suffering from broken bones.

3.  Follow Steps 1 and 2 for Other Parties - after everyone with you has gotten to safety you should check out the other vehicles involved in the accident. Wait for permission before handling any injured person in any other vehicles. There are opportunists out there who will sue their rescuer if they get hurt in the evacuation.  Assist them out of any danger after they've given permission or you discover they're incapacitated.  Then let them know that an ambulance is on the way.

4.    Exchange Insurance Information – without laying the blame for the accident either on yourself, the other party, or anyone else, simply exchange Massapequa insurance information and phone numbers with the parties involved. This will expedite the process on the back-end of things and help both parties get the claims they need later on.

5.  Take Photos if Safe to Do - if you're physically able and you have the time, get photos of the crash scene.  The more you can get of your vehicle, the other driver's vehicle, and anything else relevant to the accident, the better. If you or your loved ones have suffered any injuries, try to get pictures of those as well. Your insurance company will appreciate this.

By following these steps you will make it easier for police and paramedics to do their jobs when they arrive on the scene, and make it safer for you and your passengers. Your Long Island car insurance provider will appreciate this extra effort on your part.
